Every German learner asks the same question sooner or later: is it der, die or das? German has three genders, and the article changes with the case. The good news is that a few habits make articles much easier. These are the ones our trainers teach in German classes at our Dehradun centre.
Habit 1: learn every noun as a unit
Always learn a noun together with its article and its plural: das Buch, die Bücher. Write them as one unit in your notebook and say them aloud. A word learned without its article will need to be learned again later.
Habit 2: use word endings
- Nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit and -schaft are feminine: die Zeitung, die Freiheit.
- Nouns ending in -chen and -lein are neuter: das Mädchen, das Büchlein.
- Many nouns ending in -er that describe people or tools are masculine: der Lehrer, der Computer.
These patterns do not cover every word, but they cover a large share of the nouns you meet at A1 and A2.
Habit 3: give each gender a colour
Mark masculine nouns in blue, feminine in red and neuter in green in your notes and flashcards. Your eyes start remembering what your ears have not caught yet, and the colours make revision before the Goethe exam much faster.
Practise articles in class
Articles become automatic when you use them in real sentences. In our German courses in Dehradun, trainers build article practice into speaking tasks at every level. Contact us to join a batch.
